Hardness and Elasticity: The ink rollers on the offset press are arranged alternately with rubber rollers and metal (or hard plastic) rollers. To ensure that the rubber rollers can make good contact with the metal (or hard plastic) rollers and transfer ink under a certain contact pressure, the rubber rollers must have good elasticity and minimal compression deformation. The surface layer of the rubber should be soft, and the hardness is generally between 25-35 degrees (Shore). Being too soft or too hard will affect the quality of ink transfer.
Ink Transferability: The requirements for ink transfer of the rubber rollers are different from those of the blanket. The rubber rollers are required to have a large ink absorption capacity and a low ink transfer rate. In this way, a relatively large amount of ink can be constantly stored on the rubber rollers, which helps to maintain a uniform ink supply. Thus, when the machine starts printing, the ink system can reach uniformity in a very short time. Due to the large amount of ink adsorbed on the rubber rollers, even though the ink transfer rate is low, it can still transfer a sufficient amount of ink to the printing plate.
Adaptability: Under different temperature and humidity conditions, all properties and dimensions of the rubber rollers should not deteriorate. Under low-temperature conditions, the rubber rollers are required not to become hard and to maintain good ink transferability. Under high-temperature conditions, the rubber rollers are required not to become dry and sticky or have the rubber rot. During the operation process, the rubber rollers are required to generate little heat to maintain a constant ink viscosity.
Oil Resistance: During the printing process, a large amount of ink is adsorbed on the surface of the rubber rollers. When the printing stops, the surface of the rubber rollers is usually washed with aliphatic hydrocarbon oils. Therefore, the rubber rollers must have strong oil resistance. Rubber rollers with poor oil resistance are prone to expansion or contraction, resulting in dimensional changes that will affect the printing quality.
In addition to the above requirements, the rubber rollers must also have a certain strength and wear resistance. The surface of the rubber rollers should be free of impurities and pinholes and be easy to clean. The outer diameter of the entire rubber roller should be consistent.
